About

Stefano Campana is Lecturer of Ancient Topography at the University of Siena. He born in Switzerland but working for the past fourteen years at the University of Siena; although he is at an earlier stage in his career he has been already recognised as a leader in Landscape Archaeology. He is specialized in remote sensing, aerial photography, geophisical prospection and fieldwork for purposes of research, recording and archaeological impact assessment. He is active in the international sphere for many years and has established a large record of books and papers publication.
Since 2007 he is member of the National Commission of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage charged with implementing the National Archaeological GIS of Italy. He focuses on the understanding of past landscapes, from prehistory to the present day with particular regard on late antiquity and early middle age.
He is specialized in the application of new technologies (GIS, GPS, mobile systems, remote sensing, geophysics, 3D, virtual reality) to the detection and reconstruction of archaeological features, contexts and landscapes.
He lead a reserach team the Landscape Archaeology and Remote Sensing Laboratory and he directs several research projects and archaeological excavations all around the world.

Honors and Awards
2011 Elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA)
2011 Member representing Italy of the UISPP (International Union for Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences, CHISP, UNESCO) commission on archaeological prospection.
2011 Delegate of the Rector of the University of Siena  for technology transfer to companies in the area of humanities.
2007-present Member of the National Commission of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage charged with implementing the National Archaeological GIS for Italy.
2006-present Member of the Board of the Ph.D. School in Archaeology, Archives and Medieval History “Riccardo Francovich” of the University of Siena.

External Research Assessment
I am regularly asked to assess papers for a range of international refereed journals and research grants for councils in Italy and EC. Specific research committee experience includes:
•Archaeological Prospection, Journal of Archaeological Sciences, International Journal of Remote Sensing, ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation.
•Member of the Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology Review College.
•Independent expert for the European Union’s 7th Framework Program 2007-2013 for evaluating and monitoring research projects.
•Independent expert for the National Research Project and FIRB (Ministry for Universities-Italy)
